The jaw and pelvic floor are especially linked because both are heavily tied to subconscious muscle guarding and emotional stress responses. Trigger points in the temporalis build up from clenching, grinding, stress, and poor jaw mechanics. When they stay irritated, they can refer pain throughout the head and jaw. 🔥 Why this matters You don’t just want to smash the knot—you need to release it, restore tissue movement, and improve jaw + neck mobility so it doesn’t come right back. 🛠️ Exercises to release tension 1.) Deep pressure Use a tool to hold pressure directly on the trigger point. 2.) Disrupt tissue Rub back and forth over the knot using the tool to improve tissue mobility. 3.) Full stretch Open your mouth fully while gently pushing down with two fingers on the chin for a deeper stretch. 4.) Neck flexibility Relax your arms behind your back and slowly rotate your head side to side to improve neck mobility. Painful ‘knots’ in your muscles that never seem to go away? These knots are actually called “Trigger Points,” and they form when muscles are overstretched or shortened for too long— often from bad posture or using your muscles the wrong way. Once a trigger point forms, that area gets less oxygen, lactic acid builds up, and pain sets in. The muscle tenses up more, which reduces oxygen even further, creating a painful cycle. Step 1 – Disrupt Tight Tissue Find the tender trigger point and use a tool with a hard tip to apply firm pressure. Hold it, or move up and down or side to side. You’ll feel it “flick” under the tool. This breaks up the tight bands of tissue. Step 2 – Tighten & Stretch Make the affected muscle work for 10 seconds, then stretch it for 10 seconds. Repeat. This improves circulation, flushes out lactic acid, and brings fresh oxygenated blood to the area. Step 3 – Move Above & Below Move the joints above and below the painful area. This activates mechanoreceptors, releases endorphins, and reduces substance P, all of which decrease pain sensitivity and help your muscles reset. If you saw yesterday’s video, you know the digastric muscle can refer pain into the jaw, behind the ear, throat, and even the bottom front teeth. 💡 What’s happening? The digastric runs along the underside of the jaw from the chin toward the area behind the ear. When it becomes tight from posture, clenching, or jaw tension, it can create pain and swallowing discomfort. 🔥 Why this matters This muscle helps open the jaw and assist with swallowing. If it stays irritated, it can create jaw pain, ear pain, tooth sensitivity, and that “lump in the throat” feeling. 🛠️ Digastric stretch 1.) Look upward Gently lift your head to place the muscle on stretch. 2.) Thumb release Using both thumbs, drag downward along the sides of the throat/jaw to release tension through the digastric. 3.) Repeat slowly Use controlled pressure and repeat gradually to help the muscle relax. Releasing the digastric helps reduce jaw tension and referred pain around the ear and throat. The digastric runs from the chin to the bone behind the ear. It helps open the mouth and lift the hyoid bone during swallowing. Forward posture lengthens the muscle, while clenching and grinding tighten the muscles that close the jaw — forcing the digastric to overwork. 🔥 Why this matters When the jaw-closing muscles are tight, opening your mouth becomes harder. That overloads the digastric, leading to spasms, throat tension, swallowing issues, and referred pain near the ear or teeth. 🛠️ Exercises to reduce tension 1.) Digastric stretch Pull down on your collarbones, tuck your chin, look up, then shift your jaw forward. Rotate side to side to stretch both muscles. 2.) Masseter release Massage from the jaw up toward the cheekbone to release the muscles that close the jaw. 3.) Temporalis release Release the side of the head to reduce tension in another major jaw-closing muscle.
