Choosing the right type of physical therapy FOR YOU can be a very difficult decision if you want to make the right choice. You see, there are so many types of physical therapy. There is the type for elite athletes, the type for people in their 80s, pediatrics, women's health, specialized spine and TMJ, or joint replacements. Then of course there is neuro rehab for spinal cord injury and strokes. Oh let's not forget post-surgical that follow strict rehab protocols, balance & vertigo niches, post-concussion, and many more.
A common problem I find is that patients simply go to any place that is close to them which takes their insurance. A sort of non-specific, jack of all trades clinic. Sure, convenience and less money out of pocket is a beautiful thing, but not when it means your problem won't be solved... Plus, you end up wasting more time (which equals $$), compared to if you had gone to the right place from the start.
I always tell my family and friends to choose a physical therapist the same way you would choose a contractor to fix something at your home. If you have an electrical issue you want to call an expert electrician. You don't want the contractor who does electric on Mondays, plumbing on Tuesdays, tiling on Wednesdays, painting on Thursdays, roofing on Fridays, and moonlights as a bartender on Saturdays. You may save money, but we both know the electrical work is going to be redone a month later.
It's the same for physical therapy...
If you have a bulging disc, sciatica, or neck pain... don't go to the place that treats total knee replacements and puts most of their patients on machines while they attend to other patients.
If you have TMJ pain and headaches, don't go to the same place your 16-year-old son went do work on running and jumping after an ACL tear.
If you are experiencing persistent hip or knee pain, don't go to the place that focuses on wrist and hand therapy.
Make sense?
As an example, at Skyline Physical Therapy, we help adults become more active and mobile, without the use of painkillers, injections, or surgeries. We specialize in spinal pain which includes neck and radiating arm pain, low back or hip pain and sciatica, TMJ and headaches. In fact, we often turn away patients that we think we are not the best fit to help.
As a result, we have built a community of active adults who are unwilling to compromise their independence and lifestyle due to pain and injury. We use an individualized one-on-one approach which places the patient as the priority. Anyone who has tried traditional physical therapy knows how frustrating it can be in a clinic where each physical therapist is overloaded with many patients at all times. At Skyline Physical Therapy, the most important thing is that YOU feel in control of your health and have a say in what goes on.
Although that was the shameless plug of our clinic... what I really want is for you to understand that every physical therapy clinic is best suited for a specific type of patient's needs.
Now let's look at a few other types of specialized clinics...

How it Works
A.) Unable to leave your home due to COVID?
Tired of waiting for a convenient doctor’s appointment? Been to generic physical therapy and did not receive optimal results? New York and New Jersey are direct access to physical therapy states. This means that clients do not have to wait for authorization by their insurance company or receive a prescription from their physician to start care. Both of these advantages allow patients to start their care immediately and find recovery faster. There is no time wasted waiting for an appointment to open in a physician’s busy schedule. There is no time waiting for an insurance company adjuster to review the client’s case, and then make a judgment as to how much physical therapy will be paid for. If you are currently under the care of a physician, Dr. Jim Palmer is happy to consult with your medical team to ensure open communication for the betterment of your treatment.
B.) Hectic work + family schedule?
Don’t feel safe using the subway, cab, or UBER to visit the doctor? Save precious time and frustrations of commuting by scheduling your appointment with Dr. Jim Palmer, PT.
